Why doesn’t my website show up in search engine results?

I purchased a domain from godaddy and developed a website. Whenever I enter keywords from the website in the search engine or even including my domain name, my web site never gets listed in the results! Why?? (If I enter the www address directly into the address bar it does take me to the site so it’s not like the site is down…)
I have articles on unusual people, let’s say “Joe Smith” and let’s pretend my website is jack.com
