Speaking from my personal experience, job security does not exists anymore. Having worked for 30 years, I suddenly found myself being retrenched at the age of forty nine and a half years old and with a family of three to feed. Being laid off means I did not have sufficient money to cover my daily household expenses. Luckily for me, I survived retrenchment by quickly finding myself another job within a totally different industry and managed to work until I recently retired. Not everyone will have the opportunity and luck that I encountered. Now that I am retired I would like to share my experiences with you.
Throughout the world, many companies are already downsizing due to high labour costs, high overheads and stiff competition from lower costs producers. With the advent of China,Vietnam,Thailand,Malaysia and many other far eastern countries into the world marketplace, many big western companies from the west have moved their manufacturing plants to the above mentioned countries which have very low overheads and abundant labour. As a result workers in western countries have found themselves being laid off and with families to feed. How are they going to cope with retrenchment and survive it? Where are they going to find the money they desperately need? Imagine being laid off at an age of between forty to fifty years old (that is what happened to me). At that age it would be extremely difficult if not impossible to find alternate employment.
Another trend which results in lay offs is outsourcing. Many companies are outsourcing more and more of the work that were performed mainly by employees. These work has now been handled by freelancers and other micro-business with zero to about ten employees. So if you are an employee, even with your years of experience, you will face a very real threat of losing your job as a result of outsourcing or downsizing. If it happens to you, where are you going to find the money to survive through your unemployment period. Retrenchment is a very real threat nowadays.
