How to pick a domain name

Picking a Domain Name

One of the most important things about picking a domain name is to take a good look at the money you have available to market. If you have alot of money to spend on branding and networking then your choices are pretty much limitless. Yet if you are one of the majorities, your spending is limited. So you will want to pick a name that is easy to remember and easy to spell. That way word of mouth can be one of your great networking tools. A name that is catchy and easy to remember will also stay in the head of the observer longer.

Using your business name is always the first hope, but with the popularity of the net, and with as easy and cheap as it is to purchase a domain name your options might lead you to have to utilize another name, a different way of spelling your name, adding underscores in your name, abbreviating your name, using a .net, or a .info, etc… instead of .com,  or simply picking a name that is still suitable and compliments your objective of being easy and memorable.

You can find affordable domain names at places like GoDaddy. Simply search domain names and a huge selection beckons for your searching pleasure.

In the process of my own business growing, we  switched our name 4 times until we came up with the one we have now. Since our business was new we did not run into a lot of hardships with the transactions. So it was easy for us to grow and change with not alot of affect on the customers and potential customers. As our company transformed so did the need to re-evaluate what we were doing and who we wanted to be. Our name at the time did not reflect those desires. So we brainstormed, wrote lists, used the tools to help create a name, and then someone had the thought of this name, and it was perfect. So take your time, chat with others, compare, reflect, create.

A good couple of days of brain storming is great in the efforts of picking a domain name. Just remember the rules of keeping it easy to remember and easy spell. Also think about the keywords you are going to be using on your site to market your products/services, there be a great name in the meaning of those words.

You may also find where someone has the name in which you are wanting to use for sale. Now you are probably going to pay more then going to godaddy and purchasing one that is not already under ownership. But if it is a perfect name for you, it can easily be considered an asset to purchase the name from the owner.

There are many WHOIS tools available for you to check the availability of your names. When doing a domain name check you may find alot of your choices are already taken. There are also on-line tools that put words together for you in the process of creating a unique name. This can be a fun way to come up with your domain name. And there are a lot of great names available that you can find using such tools.

If you do a more in depth search, and I strongly suggest comparing as many domain name companies as you can when doing your domain name search. A little time spent going deeper into the search pages will help to ensure you find the domain name company and register that best suits your needs. And there are many great sites that offer free domain names and affordable (cheap) domain names.

When you have your domain name, and your site set up, advertise it. Advertise it in posts, on your business card, in your local directories, in the paper, hang fliers, speak it, in brochures and magazines.

So have fun in picking you name, choose it carefully and with audience in mind, select a couple of suggestions and think of all your options.

Sincerely.
